Parola d’Artista: Che importanza e che ruolo ha il disegno nel tuo lavoro?

Johan Gelper: Tutto inizia con il disegno; è la base su cui si costruisce il lavoro che faccio e serve come base per un processo creativo. Penso anche alle mie sculture e installazioni come a disegni tridimensionali, disegnati direttamente nello spazio circostante.

Sebbene le mie opere su carta vengano talvolta scambiate come studi per sculture o installazioni, la maggior parte, se non tutte, sono creazioni autonome. Non mi attengo mai a progetti predeterminati, ma considero il disegno come un modo di pensare. L’approccio delle opere bidimensionali su carta spesso combina una “écriture automatique” non filtrata con sistemi costruiti consapevolmente. Il risultato è un atto creativo che emerge da un processo organico e ciclico, piuttosto che da una metodologia lineare simile al design.

Parola d’Artista: What importance and role does drawing play in your work?

Johan Gelper: Everything starts with drawing; it is the foundation on which the work I make is built and it serves as the basis for a creative process. I also think of my sculptures and installations as three-dimensional drawings, these are drawn directly into the surrounding space.

Although my works on paper are sometimes mistaken as studies for sculptures or installations, most, if not all, are autonomous creations. I never stick to predetermined designs; instead, I see drawing as a way of thinking. The approach of two-dimensional works on paper often combines an unfiltered “écriture automatique” with consciously constructed systems. The result is a creative act that emerges from an organic and cyclical process, rather than a linear, design-like methodology.
