Parola d’Artista: Che ruolo e che importanza ha il disegno nel tuo lavoro?

Gisella Chaudy: Il disegno è la prima chiave di lettura dell’idea, è il linguaggio espressivo che permette di restituire in forma bidimensionale un concetto che inizialmente non ha corpo. Utilizzo il disegno per progettare le sculture o installazioni in scala, questo primo approccio mi permette di comprendere meglio il tipo di costruzione che voglio realizzare e diventa un tramite di ragionamento sull’errore che si può riscontrare nella traduzione, in un secondo momento, della forma in versione tridimensionale. Per quanto astratta, come pratica, risulta necessaria per la comprensione della scultura inserita in un primo contesto spaziale. Un altro aspetto del disegno, che è utile alla mia ricerca, è quello di riuscire ad essere mutevole. Dagli schemi tecnici e calcolati dei progetti scultorei s’allontana per esprimere concezioni puramente astratte che si traducono in immagini di galassie e costellazioni con sembianze quasi naif. E’ la versione più gestuale del segno, il momento in cui è fondamentale la presenza del caos per cercare, all’emergere del colore, il dialogo con nuove passioni.

Parola d’Artista: What role and importance does drawing play in your work?

Gisella Chaudy: Drawing is the first key to understanding the idea, it is the expressive language that allows a concept that initially has no body to be rendered in two-dimensional form. I use drawing to design sculptures or installations to scale, this first approach allows me to better understand the type of construction I want to realise and becomes a means of reasoning about the error that can be found in the translation, at a later stage, of the form into a three-dimensional version. Although abstract, as a practice, it is necessary for the understanding of the sculpture placed in an initial spatial context. Another aspect of drawing, which is useful in my research, is that of being able to be changeable. It moves away from the technical and calculated schemes of sculptural designs to express purely abstract conceptions that translate into images of galaxies and constellations with almost naïve features. It is the most gestural version of the sign, the moment in which the presence of chaos is fundamental in order to seek, with the emergence of colour, a dialogue with new passions.
