Parola d’Artista: Come nasce Spazio Torrso e che idea c’è dietro?
Michele Cotelli: TORRSO nasce da una esigenza e ricerca di spazi, il mio lavoro di artista richiedeva un nuovo studio più adeguato alle mie esigenze e per una serie di circostanze fortunate è venuta la possibilità di prendere in affitto un ex supermercato in centro a Pesaro. Viste le dimensioni ragguardevoli è venuto naturale adibire il piano terreno a spazio espositivo aperto alla città mentre il seminterrato è diventato il mio studio. Il tutto conservando la storia architettonica del locale.
L’idea è quella di creare un luogo di speriementazione e di verifica dello stato attuale delle arti visive. Lo spazio, no profit e indipendente, vuole essere un osservatorio sulle nuove generazioni e dare la possibilità di proporre le proprie ricerche stando al di fuori delle dinamiche del mercato dell’arte. Nella sostanza spazio TORRSO ha l’ambizione di trasformare un luogo che era adibito alle merci, al loro scambio univico e impersonale, in uno spazio per l’arte, fatto dal molteplice incontro delle persone che lo vogliono abitare affrontando temi sensibili e di stringente attualità.
P.d’A.: Come si articola il programma dell’attività?
M.C.: L’attività è iniziata da pochi mesi, l’inaugurazione è avvenuta 16 giugno 2023 con la personale di Mika Palonen, artista finlandese che ho ospitato per una settimana di residenza alla fine della quale ha realizzato l’installazione pittorica. Dopo la personale di Carlotta Amanzi dello scorso dicembre il 2024 si è aperto nella straordinaria cornice di Pesaro Capitale Italiana della Cultura dove TORRSO ha inserito nel calendario un articolato progetto che si sviluppa nel corso dell’anno in 5 mostre e un festival che affrontano il concept UN/NATURAL. Quanto la natura è un oggetto culturale su cui si è proiettato nei secoli lo specchio del pensiero della propria epoca? Cosa è questo binomio natura/cultura ai tempi dell’antropocene e della rivoluzione informatica? Da questa posizione decentrata dell’uomo si sonderanno quali sono i confini tra corpo e ambiente, io e altro, organico inerte e artificiale naturale; alla conclusione di ogni mostra ci sarà un momento musicale e performativo per scandire i 5 capitoli del progetto. Il Festival UN/NATURAL US invece si terrà dal 20 al 27 luglio e sarà una riflessione sulla prima persona plurale attraverso proiezioni, concerti, mostre e dibattiti che verificheranno se è ancora percorribile la strada del Noi.

P.d’A.: Quali obbiettivi avete?
M.C.: L’obbiettivo a medio termine per Spazio TORRSO è quello di consolidare la propria programmazione e diventare un punto di riferimento per la città di Pesaro e il territorio che le gravita attorno. Sono avvenuti i primi contatti con l’amministrazione comunale per verificare la possibilità di iniziare una collaborazione sul piano istituzionale con il prestigioso sistema dei Musei Civici cittadini. Mantenendo la freschezza dello spazio indipendente inoltre si intenderà inaugurare una collaborazione fattiva e strutturale con la vicina Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino per la valorizzazione e lo scambio reciproco fra docenti, giovani artisti e gli abitanti di Pesaro. Una volta aperti alla città il respiro nazionale sarà l’obbiettivo a lungo termine.

Parola d’Artista: How was Spazio Torrso born and what is the idea behind it?
Michele Cotelli: TORRSO was born out of a need and search for space, my work as an artist required a new studio more suited to my needs, and through a series of fortunate circumstances came the possibility of renting a former supermarket in the centre of Pesaro. Given its size, it was natural to use the ground floor as an exhibition space open to the city, while the basement became my studio. All while preserving the architectural history of the premises.
The idea is to create a place for experimentation and verification of the current state of the visual arts. The space, which is non-profit and independent, wants to be an observatory on the new generations and give them the opportunity to propose their own research while staying outside the dynamics of the art market. In essence, Spazio TORRSO has the ambition of transforming a place that used to be used for goods, their univocal and impersonal exchange, into a space for art, made up of the multiple encounters of the people who want to inhabit it, tackling sensitive and pressing topical issues.
P.d.A.: What is the programme of the activity like?
M.C.: The activity started a few months ago, the inauguration took place on 16 June 2023 with the personal exhibition of Mika Palonen, a Finnish artist whom I hosted for a week’s residency at the end of which he realised a pictorial installation. After Carlotta Amanzi’s solo exhibition last December, 2024 opened in the extraordinary setting of Pesaro, the Italian Capital of Culture, where TORRSO has included in its calendar an articulated project that develops over the course of the year in five exhibitions and a festival that address the UN/NATURAL concept. To what extent is nature a cultural object onto which the mirror of the thought of its age has been projected over the centuries? What is this nature/culture binomial in the times of the anthropocene and the computer revolution? From this decentralised position of man, the boundaries between body and environment, self and other, inert organic and artificial natural will be explored; at the conclusion of each exhibition there will be a musical and performative moment to mark the 5 chapters of the project. The UN/NATURAL US Festival, on the other hand, will be held from 20 to 27 July and will be a reflection on the first person plural through screenings, concerts, exhibitions and debates that will test whether the road of the We is still viable.

P.d.A.: What goals do you have?
M.C.: The medium-term goal for Spazio TORRSO is to consolidate its programming and become a point of reference for the city of Pesaro and the area around it. The first contacts have been made with the municipal administration to verify the possibility of starting a collaboration on an institutional level with the prestigious system of the city’s Civic Museums. While maintaining the freshness of the independent space, the intention is also to inaugurate an effective and structural collaboration with the nearby Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino for the enhancement and mutual exchange between teachers, young artists and the inhabitants of Pesaro. Once open to the city, a national outreach will be the long-term goal.
